I am, unfortunately, one of those people whose first instinct when seeing weather warnings is to go outside and watch as nature's fury unfolds. There are few things in nature as impressive as a thunderstorm. The raw power. The gusts of wind. The lightning. It is simultaneously magnificent and terrifying.
And of course… the thunder.
Thunder so loud it seems to shake the heavens and rattle you to your very core.
In writing Thunderclap, I wanted to capture that feeling. The sense of awe, the sense of danger, and the sheer energy of a storm rolling across the landscape. The music uses dark harmonies and driving rhythms to depict the storm's advance, with flashes of intensity suggesting bursts of lightning cutting through the sky. There is also a bit of wordplay in the title. At certain moments, performers are asked to use clapping as a musical effect, bringing the idea of a "thunderclap" to life in a very literal and engaging way for young players.
I hope you and your ensemble enjoy this musical portrayal of one of nature's most powerful displays.
