Description
Kazuki Shimoda paints a vivid musical portrait of winter giving way to spring in Thawing, a Grade 2.5 work for concert band full of rhythmic vitality and textural nuance. Inspired by the snowy landscapes of northern Japan, this piece uses engaging orchestration, minimalist influences, and expressive percussion writing to reflect the quiet mystery and gradual awakening of the natural world. Winner of the 2024 Barbara Buehlman Prize for Composition, Thawing offers developing ensembles a unique opportunity to explore color, contrast, and emotional expression through a beautifully crafted musical narrative.
